Technical Expertise for Handling an “Unmanaged” Host

Learning to take control of your web hosting and management is not the “painful experience” that most companies like to espouse. The hunt is over! This is a basic point by point instruction for the “How to Start Online Independence” in clear plain English. Writing in html or CSS is no different than writing in any language, patterns show up and following those clues makes it easier to be proficient.

Server Configuration

How much is enough server memory space?

The majority of memory necessary for server to use is only about 512mb to function smoothly. If the website is a remake of an older one with more advanced features such as Flex, Silverlight, JAVA or JAVA FX, Open Lazlo, Red Servers, and has traffic that will carry higher memory demand, then using 1gig or more, is a good idea. When a website is new it is always a good idea to start small with the 512mb memory space and expand with the traffic demands. Even if using a managed service observing the memory space is a given. Memory directly affects the amount of users to the website at any one time.

512mb or 1Gig Memory?

The major exception to the 512mb requirement is higher programming needs. These are called “Scripting Layers” which drive larger amounts of memory, for translating English scripting into readable code for computers. If Flex, Silverlight, JAVA or JAVA FX, Open Lazlo, Red Servers, or other specialized programming is planned in the website design, then 1GHZ of memory is a minimum. For most websites JAVA is not really needed. There are so many other ways to manage the size required to keep a website manageable and functioning smoothly, such as outsourcing some of the media requirements to Youtube or other back linked systems as needed.

Processor Speed

Processor speed is relevant when it comes to the server performance, for allocating for a server’s load per project. For instance, PHP requires a minimum 16mb of memory, but can run the processor load up to 50% or more of its total capacity. The processor speed affects the speed and quantity of users’ to receive or load a static to dynamic webpage upon their own computers from the web serving host. The processor speed also affects the video streams and quality of video. If it cannot be processed then the effort is void.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the allocated data transferred between the client and server. The server is allowed a given amount monthly, depending upon what is purchased. The more bandwidth the longer any service can stay online. The services can be a website, online media, audio or video chat, and transferable files, that is “open for traffic” for visitors, users or ecommerce applications.

Bandwidth and Hosting Companies

Normally, when the bandwidth is expired, exceeded or overloaded by traffic, or DDOS attacks, the website is taken offline. This is true for Shared hosting or managed hosting services. Hosting companies have been known to penalize website patrons for over using their services, and require an upgrade of the hosting package or risk having the whole website hosting service deleted.
